It is a form of cancer that develops in the prostate which is a gland in the male reproductive system. In advanced prostate cancer cases the cancer cells have metastasized (spread) from the prostate to other parts of the body, particularly the bones and lymph nodes. The latest American Cancer Society statistics estimate for about 192, 280 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in 2009, 27,360 men will die of prostate cancer. About 1 man in every 6 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. |

While these statistics are sobering it is encouraging to know that more than 2 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer previously, are still alive today. Even so, it’s a nasty type of cancer and good prostate health is essential for all men. |

Prostate Cancer Symptoms
Prostate cancer is not normally diagnosed in younger men. It use to be a disease afflicting men as they aged and would surface as symptoms in their 70’s. But today men as early as their 50’s are being diagnosed and with statistics on the rise even early in some cases.
The early symptoms of prostate cancer usually go undiagnosed. They involve
- frequent urination
- increased urination at night
- difficulty starting and maintaining a steady stream of urine
- blood in the urine and
- painful urination
Prostate cancer may also cause problems with sexual function and performance, such as difficulty achieving erection or painful ejaculation. Other symptoms can develop during later stages of the disease. For example, advanced prostate cancer can spread to other parts of the body causing additional symptoms like bone pain. Prostate cancer in the spine can also compress the spinal cord, causing leg weakness and urinary and fecal incontinence. If you have any of these symptoms or have prostate cancer in your family the earlier you get on to seeking medical help the better your odds are statistically of overcoming this type of cancer.
